Welcome to Randfontein; a town that – similarly to Johannesburg and otherGauteng‘s well established towns - owes its origins to the Witwatersrand Gold Rush in the late 1800's. It was in 1890 when this mining town was formally established and administered by Krugersdorp after the government of Transvaal decided to buy 428 ha of the Perdekraal farm in order to establish an administrative centre for the mines that were developing in and around the area. In 1929, Randfontein was proclaimed an independent municipality. Along withMogale City , Westonaria Local Municipality and Merafong City, Randfontein Local Municipality forms a part of the West Rand District Municipality.
Although still an industrial town of the West Rand District Municipality,Randfontein has over the years turned into a well established residential area as well. According to a 2011 census, Randfontein has a population of about 150 000.

Although Randfontein doesn't have the best climate in Gauteng, the development in the area is slowly turning this town into an ideal residential area. Even though surrounded by mine dumps, lying attractively on the North West of Randfontein is Magaliesberg and Witwatersberg mountains giving residents and tourists of the area a great scenic view of nature.
