GBCSA to run new green building courses

In response to evident need and industry demand, the Green Building Council of South Africa has launched two new courses – “Greening Existing Buildings” and “Economics of Green Building”.

These unique and innovative courses will be offered in Cape Town and Johannesburg during the months of May and June alongside the core educational offerings that the Council has been offering on a regular basis.

Greening Existing Buildings

This full day interactive course presented by the Green Building Council of South Africa and facilitated by Mr Colin Devenish, Executive Manager: Operations of the V&A Waterfront showcases greening and performance improving techniques for existing buildings. Participants are taught how to identify low cost and no cost improvements; optimise energy and water efficiency; implement sustainable purchasing and waste management policies; improve indoor environmental quality including maximising occupant’s health and comfort and implement green cleaning policies.

The course, taking place in Cape Town on Friday 10 May and in Johannesburg on Thursday 06 June 2013, is suited for architects, developers and owners, engineers, contractors, facility managers, property managers and tenants and also includes a free Existing Building Survival Strategy Guide developed by the Green Building Council of South Africa in conjunction with Arup.

Economics of Green Building

The financial motivation for green building is clear and The Economics of Green Building Course demonstrates this. The course emphasizes the necessity to break out of the traditional “circle of blame” and consider investment decisions for the short, medium and long term.

This half-day course, which is taking place in Johannesburg on Monday 03 June and in Cape Town on Wednesday 26 June 2013, will outline and explore the financial case for green buildings with focus on topics such as the obligations of property stakeholders, the perceived green building inputs and costs, the benefits and the property value of green buildings.

In addition to these two new courses, the GBCSA will also be hosting their other well-received official accredited green building courses:

Green Star SA Accredited Professional Course

The GBCSA’s signature course and core offering that introduces the Green Star rating tools and is the first requirement for obtaining status as a Green Star SA Accredited Professional will be taking place in Cape Town on Wednesday 08 May and in Johannesburg on Wednesday 05 June 2013.

The Green Star Accredited Professional course gives a comprehensive overview of the Green Star SA building rating system and trains industry professionals on each category and credit within the rating system (Management, Indoor Environmental Quality, Energy, Transport, Water, Materials, Land Use & Ecology, Emissions, Innovations, Integrated Design). After attending the course, an optional exam may be written online, earning the successful candidates the designation of “Green Star SA Accredited Professional”.

Green Star SA Project Certification Workshop

This compelling course, taking place in Johannesburg on Friday 07 June 2013, is about sharpening your pencil to submit an application for a green building certification.

The Green Star SA Project Certification Workshop is an advanced course - suitable for anyone who has either completed the Green Star SA Accredited Professional course (recommended) or is familiar with the Green Star SA certification procedure – that is designed to teach participants about the process of registering a project, collecting and compiling documentation, ensuring appropriate documentation quality, optimising electronic submissions and the assessment process.

Greening the Inside: Commercial Interiors

This workshop explores the key issues for greening commercial interiors and how to integrate best-practices into our design process and project implementation. The relevance of this course is further underlined in light of the forthcoming development of an interiors rating tool by the GBCSA that will address tenant interior fit outs across different market segments.

Michelle Ludwig, commercial sustainable interior architect and expert green design consultant will be facilitating this fascinating and interactive in Cape Town on Thursday 09 May 2013.
