South Africa's property market showed its highest return in 2012 since the 2008-09 global financial crisis, according to the SAPOA/IPD South Africa Annual Property Index released in Johannesburg last week.

The index showed that the country's property sector delivered a 15.2% total return last year, an increase on the 10.3% return in 2011. Read more in Record returns for SA property market

In Continuing low interest rates raise confidence in the housing market, Bill Rawson, Chairman of the Rawson Property Group, says that this week’s decision made by the Monetary Policy Committee to leave the interest rates unchanged was expected by almost everyone in the residential property sector because unemployment in South Africa is still at very high levels and GDP growth remains unimpressive – with most forecasts predicting between 2,2% to 2,7% this year.

What to do with your property if you are transferred by your work to another area? In Should you sell or become a landlord, Berry Everitt, MD of the Chas Everitt International property group says that many work-related moves these days are only for the duration of a specific project or contract, so it is not surprising that those who have already acquired a property often decide not to sell their ‘home base’, but to let it out while they’re away and rent a temporary home themselves in the new location.

Enjoy!
