Good news is that despite a weaker Rand and higher long-bond yields, South Africa’s listed property sector registered a gain of 1.4% during the week ended 27 September 2013. For September as a whole, the sector is up 7.5%, comfortably outpacing both the South African equity (+5.8%) and bond (+3.4%) markets. According to South African Property Owners Association CEO, Neil Gopal, global investors, users and occupants of buildings have long grappled with the fact that consistent, international property standards simply don’t exist. But this is set to change as a newly proposed International Property Measurement Standard (IPMS) will be a standardised and globally applicable method for measuring property, from one market to the next.
